WATCH: MEDVEDEV CONTROVERSIALLY AVOIDS DISQUALIFICATION

Former world No.1 Daniil Medvedev will consider himself lucky after he avoided disqualification during his Laver Cup match against Ben Shelton.

Tensions boiled over when Medvedev threw his racquet towards the crowd in anger to gift his opponent set point in the opening set, prompting a furious reaction from Team World as they called for the Russian to be defaulted.

The 28-year-old received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct but escaped further punishment.

Much to the disgust of Team World, Frances Tiafoe and team captain John McEnroe were seen pleading with chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani, making the case for Medvedev's disqualification.

Lahyani turned to Tiafoe and said: "Frances, it bounced and it didn’t hit anyone. The result was not bad. The result was not bad. If it had hit someone, I agree with you."

A few games later, Tiafoe appealed with experienced tennis official, Gerry Armstrong, as he continued the argument.

Medvedev eventually went on to lose the match 6-7(6), 7-5, 10-7.
