Two out of three Aussies reached the round of 16 in Miami after heroic performances from Adam Walton and Alex de Minaur.

Walton, 25, eventually got the better of unseeded opponent Coleman Wong 7-6(6) 4-6 6-4 to book a date with third-seed and US Open finalist Taylor Fritz.

Admitting there were "a lot of ebbs and flows" throughout the match, Walton is proud of how he handled the contest with his maturity and calmness.

"It keeps my nerves down and keeps my heart rate lower if I'm just trying to be a bit more relaxed," the Queenslander shared.

"If I'm too upbeat, [I'm] too tense and don't play my best tennis, so still trying to figure it out, but that gets the best tennis out of me."

Having lost in the final round of qualifying to good friend Tristan Schoolkate, a lifeline was handed to Walton after the withdrawal of Hubert Hurkacz, opening the door for the world No.85 Aussie as the fourth alternate.

"A bunch of good fortune has happened," Walton confessed. "I was the Lucky Loser, not meant to be in the draw, and to be given a second chance and be able to take advantage of it is really special."

The highly-anticipated encounter between Alex de Minaur and Brazilian teenage talent João Fonseca lived up to the billing at Hard Rock Stadium in a three-set thriller.

De Minaur returns inside the top-10 per the ATP live rankings after fighting back from a set down and 0-2 in the final set to win 5-7 7-5 6-3.

"Mentally I was ready for this match," de Minaur revealed in his post-match press conference.

"I knew that not only was I going to play an incredible talent like João playing with nothing to lose and with immense confidence right now, but also playing an incredible crowd which was going to be by his side from the first point until the last. I knew it was going to be a very dangerous combo.

"The only option for me was to keep my head down, stay positive, fight to the end and ultimately show what I can do."

The top-ranked Aussie will need to mentally prepare for another tough day at the office against Matteo Berrettini.

Also playing on Centre Court earlier in the day, Jordan Thompson fell to top-seed Alexander Zverev 7-5 6-4.
