No.2 seed Iga Świątek has benefited from an incorrect call by the chair umpire, which saw the Video Assistant Review (VAR) fail to intervene during her quarter-final victory.
Świątek dispatched No.8 seed Emma Navarro 6-1 6-2, equalling her best run at Melbourne Park whilst dropping 14 games in five matches.
But controversy erupted in the second set when the 23-year-old won a point that shouldn't have stood, as replays showed there was a double bounce.
In 2023, a new system was introduced on the ATP and WTA Tour's which allows players to review decisions including double bounces and foul shots.
Channel 9 commentator Sam Smith was staggered that the call was missed, on top of Navarro not challenging it.
"You are kidding me!" she said after the rally.
"Navarro thinks the same; she thinks that's not up."
Although Navarro argued with the umpire, it was deemed too late to review the call.
John Millman offered his thoughts on the drama that unfolded on Rod Laver Arena.
"To expect Navarro to completely give up on the point, when in the moment, I don't think she should be having to," he said during his Nine commentary role.
The American spoke to the media afterwards, playing down suggestions the wrong call impacted the flow of the match.
"I don't feel like it was a huge momentum swing. Obviously the score says otherwise," she confirmed. "I felt like I moved on, and next game I was ready to play. I thought the next two games I played pretty good. Wasn't able to convert a couple of points. But I didn't feel a huge momentum shift."
