Former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka immediately required a chair to sit on after suffering a disheartening injury at the Miami Open.

Returning serve in the opening game of the second set against Karolína Muchová, Azarenka could barely move in what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder.

The chair umpire rushed down to check on the two-time Australian open winner, who at one stage was leaning against the advertising board in tears.

A chair was brought on court for Azarenka to take a seat as the tournament physio did her best to help her play on, but the injury was too serious, forcing the 35-year-old to retire mid-match.

In an act of great sportsmanship, Muchová carried Azarenka's bags off court.

Azarenka's second-round exit will most likely see her drop out of the world's top-50.

Before the injury, she struggled to find her rhythm against a dominant Muchová, copping a first set bagel.
