'SEE YOU SOON IN AUSTRALIA': SAKKARI PULLS PIN ON 2024 SEASON

Former world No.3 Maria Sakkari will take time off to recover from a persisting shoulder injury that forced her to retire at the US Open six weeks ago.

The 29-year-old lost the opening set 6-2 in her first-round match at Flushing Meadows against Yafan Wang before calling the physio and pulling the pin.

Sakkari updated her fans via Instagram to reveal the news.

"For the last few weeks, my main focus has been on recovering from my shoulder injury. Unfortunately, due to this, I will have to end my season earlier than planned. I will be back stronger and pain-free.

"Thank you all for your support. It's been a challenging year, but it has taught me a lot as well.

"See you soon in Australia."

Last month it was announced that Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas will represent Greece at the upcoming United Cup in Sydney and Perth commencing in late December.

Having lost six tournaments this year in the opening round, Sakkari's ranking has dropped to No.22 in the world.
