'PLEASURE AND HONOUR TO HAVE ANDY AS COACH': DJOKOVIC EMBRACES CHANGE

In November, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray announced via social media that the latter would become Djokovic’s new coach, and the tennis world was shocked.

"It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner," Djokovic stated over narration in the social media clip.

"Welcome aboard coach Andy Murray."

In yesterday's press conference, Djokovic opened up about how the partnership came about.

"Andy just finished his playing career six months ago," the 10-time Australian Open champion stated.

"It was somewhat of a surprise for him when I called him, but I think his tennis IQ is very high."

Djokovic attributes the respect he has for Murray as a driving factor for the collaboration.

"He really has inspired myself and a lot of people around the world," the Serbian great expressed.

Furthermore, the deep knowledge and history between the two players made Murray an ideal choice for Djokovic.

Despite sharing a long rivalry on the court for many years, this seemed the right decision for both parties.

"I think that his unique perspective on my game is the fact that he has played me for 25 years," the 37-year-old said.

"[The] first time we faced each other was when we were 12-years-old. He knows the evolution of my game, I guess the weaknesses and strengths of my game."

Djokovic’s first-round match against American Nishesh Basavareddy will be the official debut of the Djokovic-Murray partnership.

The pair have not been working together for long, but Djokovic views the collaboration as a positive one.

"He's very meticulous. He's a very dedicated professional," Djokovic shared.

"So far, I've been enjoying this collaboration."

Communication and motivation are key elements that Djokovic respects coming from Murray as a coach.

"He gives me motivation, inspires me to be spending time on the court," Djokovic revealed.

"We communicate a lot. We talk about a lot of different things.

"He's trying to understand me on different levels, speaking to other team members that know me better."

Will Murray be able to guide Djokovic to an 11th Australian Open title? Time will tell, but tennis will enjoy seeing Murray back on the tennis scene as coach of the 24-time major winner.
