The grass courts of Alexander Park Tennis Club in Perth will host the fifth edition of the Sawatzky Cup in January to continue a great initiative.
Tournament organiser Norman Burns named the event after his good mate, Ross Sawatzky, who sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 48 from a very rare autoimmune condition called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
Sawatzky was a Perth tennis player and a brilliant servant to the community.
With Sawatzky's family's backing, Burns started the tournament with the idea of implementing a Davis Cup/Fed Cup-like format for men and women, which will be a single-day doubles event.
The event aims to raise awareness and funds for Rare Voices Australia, the peak body helping more than two million Australians facing rare illnesses and diseases.
It will be held on Saturday January 11 2025, spread across 18 courts.
The Sawatzky Cup has grown from 36 competitors and one sponsor to 100 competitors and multiple sponsors, including major tennis brands such as Yonex.
Winning teams will collect prizes valued at around A$2,000, but the day is not about winning, it's about having fun and contributing to a fantastic cause.
