KOKKINAKIS ONE OF NINE AUSSIES SET TO LIGHT UP ADELAIDE

Approaching its sixth edition, the Adelaide International will host one of the final lead-up tournaments before the Australian Open.

The WTA 500 field features three players inside the top-10, while the men's 250 sees Tommy Paul enter as the top-seed, ranked No.12.

Seven Aussies in singles were initially set to partake in the tournament across both events, including four wildcards given a priceless opportunity, but a further two Australians including Adam Walton and James Duckworth increased that number in the final round of qualifying.

Reigning champions Jeļena Ostapenko and Jiří Lehečka will aim to defend their titles.

The main draw commences on Monday, January 6 and concludes Saturday, January 11.

Aussie Watch

Wildcard recipient Thanasi Kokkinakis aims to create new memories in his home city, three years after he clinched his first ATP singles title.

Despite Kokkinakis skipping the Brisbane International due to a hip injury, the 28-year-old will commence his campaign against China's Zhizhen Zheng.

The man on the losing end of the Adelaide final in 2022 was Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, who prepares to face world No.64 Sydneysider Christopher O'Connell.

Tristan Schoolkate, another wildcard, awaits a tough assignment when he faces eighth seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry, while Li Tu rounds out the Aussie wildcards on the men's side; set to face an unknown qualifier.

World No.67 Aleksandar Vukic also benefited from late withdrawals to gain automatic entry, as he prepares to face America's Marcos Giron in the opening round.

After experiencing endless highs last year, 16-year-old Emerson Jones will attempt to take advantage of her wildcard as she begins her Adelaide campaign against either a wildcard or a Lucky Loser.

Winner of the Junior Female Athlete of the Year Award alongside Maya Joint, Jones had a breakout 2024, reaching two Junior Grand Slam finals, clinching the Junior World Tour Finals and becoming the first Aussie female since Jelena Dokic in 1998 to achieve the Junior No.1 ranking.

Despite a stellar run to her maiden WTA 500 final in Guadalajara last year, world No.105 Olivia Gadecki requires a wildcard for the event.

Off the back of two straight-set defeats against Nadia Podoroska and Katie Boulter at the United Cup, the 22-year-old's Australian Open preparation doesn't get any easier as she faces third-seed Daria Kasatkina.

In the doubles, Matthew Ebden begins his new partnership with Belgium's Joran Vliegen as the sixth seeds, while Ellen Perez teams up with Kateřina Siniaková in the women's doubles as No.2 seeds.

Rest of the field

In a fairly open field in the men's draw, two Americans, Paul and Sebastian Korda, make up the top-two seeds.

Korda, runner-up in 2023 to Novak Djokovic, hopes to pull off a resurgence after an inconsistent 2024 season.

Lehečka will move in as the No.3 seed after the withdrawal of Tomáš Macháč due to cramps suffered at the United Cup.

In the WTA half, a last-minute withdrawal from two-time major finalist Jasmine Paolini has paved the way for three Americans to make up the top-four seeds, with US Open runner-up Jessica Pegula entering as the top-ranked seed.

2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins and former world No.2 Paula Badosa lurk as potential threats to take home the title, while Kasatkina prays she can make it third-time lucky after two consecutive defeats in the Adelaide final.
