JOINT SAVILLE SPEARHEAD AUSSIE CAMPAIGN ON DAY TWO IN HOBART

Maya Joint and Daria Saville start Australian singles action on the second day of the WTA 250 tournament in Hobart.

Maya Joint will be second up on centre court when she takes on Serbian Olga Danilović.

The 18-year-old Aussie is coming off a successful week in Brisbane where she defeated Madison Inglis before going down to Victoria Azarenka in three tough sets.

Joint has already had a winning start to her Hobart debut. She and partner Talia Gibson had a first-round doubles win against fellow Aussies Alexandra Bozovic and Kaylah McPhee.

It will be a tough assignment against Danilović who is coming off her most successful year on tour and is ranked No.53.

In the night session, fan favourite Saville spearheads the Aussie campaign.

The world No.124 made the tournament's semi-finals in 2024 and hopes for another deep run.

She faces Amanda Anisimova ranked No.36 who is coming off a first-round loss at the Auckland tournament.

The American returned in 2024 after taking time off for burnout the previous year.

Saville, who has faced multiple injuries in recent years, will be looking for her first win of 2025. In Brisbane last week, she fell in qualifying to Ukrainian Anastasiya Soboleva.

Comments made by Saville after losing the first-round at the US Open had many thinking retirement may be on the cards, but she set the record straight when talking to The Age earlier this month.

"There were articles after the US Open that I’m done, but I was really angry. I shouldn’t have done this interview straight off the court," Saville said.

"I’m very honest, and I said how I felt at that time. I’ve said some things before where it made me look like I hate the game – but that’s not true. I love it. How often do people get frustrated with their jobs?"

In other notable match-ups, New Zealand’s Lulu Sun, who made the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year, takes on former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.

Meanwhile, No.1 seed Daria Yastremska from Ukraine plays American Katie Volynets.
