INGLIS' FAIRYTALE COMES TO A CLOSE IN MELBOURNE

Maddison Inglis’ dream run at the Australian Open has come to an end in the third round at the hands of Estonian Kaia Kanepi.

The support of a half-filled Rod Laver Arena crowd wasn’t enough to get Inglis over the line as she slumped to a 6-2, 2-6, 0-6 defeat in one hour and 31 minutes.

It’s a disappointing end for Inglis who looked as though she had booked her spot in the fourth round following a dominant opening set. The Aussie sent eight winners flying past the Estonian as she breezed to a one-set lead.

Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there as Inglis - visibly tired - ran out of steam as Kanepi started to lift. The match became a mere formality in the second and third sets.

Nevertheless, Inglis has been the story of the summer from an Australian perspective and has kickstarted her career following an amazing week in Melbourne.

The West Australian will be one to watch in 2022.
