Aussie wildcard Priscilla Hon fought hard but was outdone by 31st seed Marketa Vondrousova in the opening round of the Australian Open.

Hon came into the match in some decent form after knocking off the Czech No. 3 Petra Kvitova in Adelaide two weeks ago. However, she was no match for the Czech No. 5 Vondrousova, going down 2-6, 3-6 in an hour and 10 minutes on Court 5.

The Aussie was right in the contest but constantly gave away free points off of her racquet, hitting 35 unforced errors compared to 17 from the Czech.

Conversely, Hon showed what she was capable of by hitting more winners (14) than Vondrousova (13). However, the Aussie wasn’t able to keep her errors down which cost her a good chance of winning the match.

Vondrousova is due to play the winner of Russian Liudmila Samsonova and American qualifier Emina Bektas in the second round.
