Tennis fans on Court 2 of Colombia's Bogota Open held their breath when British No.5 Francesca Jones collapsed mid-match, requiring urgent medical attention and a wheelchair.

The 24-year-old was in the midst of a tense battle against unseeded Argentine Julia Riera in the round of 32, forcing the match into a deciding set.

However, with Riera's finish line in sight, her opponent's sudden on-court collapse sent shockwaves across the tournament.

Footage shows Jones tossing the ball in the air to serve but failing to connect with the ball, clutching her head and falling to the ground in distressing scenes.

She was forced off the court in a wheelchair, assisted by Riera in a touch of terrific sportsmanship, with the match ending in retirement.

"Due to a physical issue, Francesca Jones has withdrawn from her match against Julia Riera at 6-2 5-7 5-3 in favour of the Argentinian," a tournament statement read.

"We wish the British tennis player a speedy recovery."

Since the harrowing incident occurred, Jones posted a message on her Instagram story to provide an update on the factors which led to her collapse, citing “limited oxygen” at high altitude.

The world No.129 retired midway through the third set against Emiliana Arango due to injury at the end of February in a tournament held in Mexico.

Jones was born with a rare genetic condition called Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia, who plays with four fingers on each hand as well as seven toes.
