18-year-old Brazillian João Fonseca has triumphed at the ATP Challenger event in Canberra in another sign that he’s one of tennis’ brightest young talents.
The title continues a career-best month for Fonseca, after he took out the pre-Christmas Next Gen Finals without dropping a match, overcoming top 50 opponents Arthur Fils and Jakub Mensik.
This week’s title is his second at ATP Challenger after a maiden crown in Lexington last August and sees his ranking surge toward the top 100.
At the beginning of last year’s Australian Open qualifying, Fonseca was ranked No.727 in the world and playing events across South America.
One year on, the Brazilian holds a live ranking of No.113 and may be the most dangerous player in Melbourne’s qualifying draw as he bids to reach a maiden Grand Slam main draw.
Playing his first career event in Australia, Fonseca won his five matches without dropping a set, ultimately defeating American Ethan Quinn 6-4 6-4 in the final.
In front of a strong Canberra crowd for Saturday's decider, the 18-year-old's aggressive approach and forehand prowess were on full display, facing zero break points en route to victory.
Fonseca will now head to Melbourne to begin his Australian Open qualifying campaign on Monday or Tuesday; and should be at the top of the watchlist for any spectators heading to AO Opening Week.
