Thanasi Kokkinakis’ much anticipated Australian Open campaign has come to an end on day one at the hands of German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann.
The 25-year-old Aussie evidently had little left in the tank after claiming his maiden ATP Tour title in Adelaide less than 48 hours ago, slumping to a 2-6, 3-6, 2-6 defeat in two hours and seven minutes.
It’s a maiden Grand Slam main draw win for 30-year-old Hanfmann, who played an ultra-aggressive brand from the first point and moved Kokkinakis around the court as much as possible to exhaust the little energy he had in his disposal.
The clearly fatigued Kokkinakis hit 42 unforced errors and converted on 0/9 break point opportunities.
Hanfmann will now face Rafael Nadal in the second round on Wednesday.
