Jordan Thompson has withdrawn from next week's Adelaide International following an injury picked up at Pat Rafter Arena earlier today.
The 30-year-old retired after three games in the second set against Grigor Dimitrov due to a calf issue which was treated by the physio during a medical timeout.
Microphones picked up part of Thompson's conversation with the Bulgarian at the net, as the Aussie was heard telling Dimitrov that his calf was "already sore" before the match.
Now, confirmation has come through that Thompson will skip the Adelaide 250 event to prioritise getting his body 100 per cent in shape for the Australian Open.
Thompson had been struggling with Plantar Fasciitis, a condition that causes pain in the heel or bottom of the foot, in the lead-up to Brisbane when he participated in Abu Dhabi's World Tennis League.
On Sunday, Thompson and O'Connell paired up for doubles action in Brisbane where they fell short in a tight 4-6 6-3 10-6 defeat in the opening round.
Given his current ranking of No.27 in the live rankings, it will be a race against time whether Thompson can take advantage of a top-32 seed at a Grand Slam for the first time.
Tournament organisers in Adelaide will be hopeful that local favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis will feature in the event amid his Brisbane withdrawal due to a hip injury.
