ITALY STAND IN AUSTRALIA'S WAY: DATE, TIME, POSSIBLE MATCHUPS

Australia needs to come back down to earth as they prepare for a mammoth task against defending Davis Cup champions Italy in the semi-finals.

Overnight, Lleyton Hewitt's men caused an upset as they toppled the USA 2-1 to qualify for their third consecutive semi-final in the event.

However, it doesn't get any easier for the 17-time winners, given they face a resurgent Italy spearheaded by world No.1 Jannik Sinner.

In a rematch of last year's Davis Cup final where the Azzurri lifted the trophy, the Aussies went down 2-0.

Possible Matchups:

Alex de Minaur, Australia's highest-ranked singles player, is expected to face Sinner for the ninth time in his career.

The 25-year-old holds a negative 0-8 head-to-head record against the two-time major champion, having only claimed one set out of a possible 19 in their past meetings.

Sinner defeated de Minaur in straight sets at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin last week, indicating how tough the Sydenysider's assignment will be.

The other singles rubber could become a head-scratcher for Hewitt to contemplate, with Thanasi Kokkinakis demonstrating yet again that he is reliable when donning the green and gold - producing an epic win over big-server Ben Shelton.

However, if Matteo Berrettini is selected for the singles, world No.24 Alexei Popyrin defeated the former Wimbledon finalist 7-5 7-6(2) at the Paris Masters over three weeks ago.

Popyrin’s massive game could match up perfectly against someone like Berrettini who possesses unbelievable power, but Lorenzo Musetti is also a valuable card that the Italians could utilise.

If doubles action is required, expect Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson to pick up from where they left off against the States, with the pair evidently in sync.

Italy captain Filippo Volandri, notorious for making the right calls, could again rely upon Sinner and Berrettini for doubles, as they looked sharp in their win against Argentina.

Date and Time:

Saturday, November 23 - 11pm AEDT

Where to Watch:

The winner will face Germany or the Netherlands in the Davis Cup final on Monday morning AEDT.
