AUS OPEN FIRST-ROUND PREVIEW

The 2025 Australian Open gets underway tomorrow (January 12) at Melbourne Park, beginning with a Sunday start for the second time.

Once again, there will be a subdued schedule on day one, with 16 men's and 16 women's matches before the event ramps up significantly from Monday.

Sunday Schedule:

Five Aussies will begin their home Grand Slam campaigns on Sunday; three of which will be on the outside courts.

The first two matches on Court 3 will see Omar Jasika and Adam Walton battle Frenchmen Hugo Gaston and Quentin Halys, respectively.

The pair will undoubtedly be competing in front of a divided French and Aussie crowd; and should each be well-matched in their encounters.

Li Tu and Daria Saville will make up the Margaret Court Arena night session, each seeking to cause upsets against higher-ranked opponents.

Headlining the first night session on Rod Laver Arena will be defending women's champion Aryna Sabalenka and world No.2 Alexander Zverev.

Monday Schedule:

Monday's order of play (released Saturday afternoon) will be one of the more hectic schedules Melbourne Park has seen in some time, with two of the world's top three men and women in action, alongside 11 Australians.

One of the three leading male contenders will be sent to Margaret Court Arena, with Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic, all commencing their campaigns.

On the women's side, two of the top three event favourites, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek, will also be in action, creating elite value for arena ticket holders on Monday.

Fresh off a career-best week in Hobart, 18-year-old Australian Maya Joint will face seventh seed Jessica Pegula; in what will be the first top 10 clash of her young career.

The return of Nick Kyrgios will headline the John Cain Arena twilight session, as he takes on assertive Brit Jacob Fearnley, who took a set off Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.

Given the quality of Monday's schedule, with six of the men's top 12 seeds playing, a grounds pass will allow you to see a host of Aussies across the outside courts, likely including Thanasi Kokkinakis and many more.

Tuesday Schedule:

A further six Aussies will be in Tuesday action, led by Alex de Minaur who is set to headline the Rod Laver Arena night session against the dangerous Botic van de Zandschulp.

16-year-old Emerson Jones will get her first taste of Australian Open arena action against sixth seed Elena Rybakina.

After pushing world No.9 Daria Kasatkina in Adelaide, there will deservedly be significant attention on the rising Aussie who could undoubtedly test the 2023 finalist.

Alexei Popyrin will begin his first Australian Open as a seed, whilst top 5 stars Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev and Jasmine Paolini will feature across the arenas.

Tuesday will also showcase a selection of quality men's matches, including ninth seed Andrey Rublev battling 18-year-old qualifier Joao Fonseca in what may be the most intriguing round-one encounter.

Big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetschi Perricard will face his 17-year-older compatriot Gaël Monfils in a clash of generations; a match set to provide entertainment with both men bringing strong lead-up form.
