2024 Australian Open finalist Qinwen Zheng will skip the upcoming United Cup to focus on her preparations for the first Grand Slam of the year.
The 22-year-old's surprise run at Melbourne Park earlier this year kick-started a tremendous season — winning a gold medal in singles at the Paris Olympics, finishing runner-up at the WTA finals and achieving a career-high ranking of No.5.
But her success began in the latest edition of the United Cup, where she helped China reach the quarter-finals.
In a blow for tournament organisers in 2025, the powerful hitter will not feature in the event.
"Hi everyone, just a quick update that I am sadly not going to be competing at the United Cup next week," Zheng wrote on Instagram.
"After the long season that 2024 was for me, I need a few extra weeks of rest, recovery and good training to get ready for the new season.
"I had such a fantastic time at the United Cup in January of this year, and therefore will miss the event greatly.
"Still, I am so excited to be back in Australia soon and I will see you all in Melbourne in a couple of weeks!"
China is drawn in Group E alongside Brazil and reigning champions Germany.
