17-year-old phenomenon Mirra Andreeva is on top of the world after pipping the top-seed to her maiden Indian Wells title in the Californian desert.

A nervy start to the final failed to rattle the Russian teenager, who fought back in style to complete a 2-6 6-4 6-3 comeback over Aryna Sabalenka.

"Last but not least, I’d like to thank myself," Andreeva said with a smile during her trophy ceremony speech. "For fighting til the end and always believing in me. For never quitting. I tried to run like a rabbit today because Aryna was sending bullets."

The new world No.6 is the youngest player to win the WTA 1000 Indian Wells title since Serena Williams in 1999. Andreeva's wins against Iga Świątek and Sabalenka make her the first player under the age of 18 to beat the world No.1 and world No.2 back-to-back since Williams at the 1999 US Open.

Andreeva, who pocketed A$1.9 million for her stellar fortnight at Indian Wells, also won the Dubai 1000 title last month.

Britain's Jack Draper won the top prize in the men's final after a convincing 6-2 6-2 victory over 2022 Paris Masters champion Holger Rune, backing up his impressive semi-final win against Carlos Alcaraz.

It marks Draper's first-ever Masters 1000 title - rewarded with a new career-high rank of No.7 to climb into the top-10 for the first time.

"I feel like I deserve this, in all honesty," said an emotional Draper. "The amount of adversity I have been through, the amount of sacrifices, the amount of time all the people around me have put into me.

"It’s an emotional feeling to know how much you have gone through and put in. To be here now and to say I will be seven in the world, I cannot tell you how much that means to me."

The next WTA/Masters 1000 event begins in Miami this week.
